This scene began on a small Achaemenid cylinder seal about 2,500 years ago. Popularly known as the Royal Seal of Darius, it shows Darius standing in a chariot and aiming his bow at a rearing lion while another lion lies beneath the horses. A winged figure appears above the hunt. I wanted to enlarge the scene so the full story could be seen and each figure could have real raised depth.
The horses, chariot, lions, palm trees, and winged figure rise from the wood instead of sitting flat like a print. As light moves across this 3D wood relief, different parts of the Achaemenid lion hunt stand out. For someone who loves Persian history, it can feel like bringing a small part of that ancient world into their home.
I carve each piece from solid beech wood using CNC to create the main shape and raised depth. I then hand-sand the surface and edges and add laser detailing to bring out Darius, the chariot, horses, lions, palm trees, winged figure, and smaller lines. The wood is finished with shellac to help protect the surface while keeping the natural grain visible.
This 7" x 7" x 0.5" wall art has enough detail to stand on its own. It can also be paired with other Persian history pieces from my shop, such as the Persepolis Guard, Royal Audience, Lion and Bull, Double Bull Capital, or Shahriar and the Lion. Together, they can form a small collection inspired by ancient Persian art.
