This relief is inspired by the famous lion hunt carvings of ancient Assyria, images that once decorated palace walls more than 2,600 years ago. I was drawn to the way these ancient artists used stone carvings to show how their world understood power, danger, and leadership. By turning that scene into a small wooden wall art piece, I wanted to create a bridge between an ancient civilization and a modern home, so people today can feel close to a story that belongs to human history, not just one place or one time.
In ancient Assyria, scenes like this were carved into stone palace walls so people could see the king as brave and in control. The lion was not just an animal in the picture. It stood for danger, wild power, and the things a ruler had to face. When the king was shown standing against the lion, the message was clear: he was strong enough to protect his people and keep order.
I carve this piece from solid beech wood using CNC, then hand-sand it so the surface and edges feel clean and finished. Laser detail helps bring out the king, attendants, weapons, lion, clothing, and smaller details in the scene. The piece is finished with shellac to protect the wood and keep its natural character visible.
This 7" x 7" x 0.5" wall art is easy to display on a bookshelf, desk area, entryway, home office, hallway, or personal wall.
