I created this Five-Clawed Dragon relief for someone who wants a dragon piece with meaning, not just motion and detail. The coiled body, sharp claws, cloud forms, and strong face give the carving a feeling of power, control, and presence.
In Chinese imperial tradition, the five-clawed dragon was closely connected with the emperor and was understood as a symbol of authority, strength, and command over natural forces. It is different from a general dragon image because the five claws carry a more specific imperial meaning.
The piece starts as solid beech wood and is CNC-carved to shape the dragon’s body, claws, scales, face, clouds, and layered relief. After carving, I hand-sand the surface and edges, then add laser detail to sharpen the smaller lines in the scales, whiskers, and facial features. A shellac finish gives the wood a warm natural tone and helps protect the surface.
