Mexican Coat of Arms Wood Relief – National Emblem of Sovereignty and Origin

The Mexican Coat of Arms is the official national emblem of Mexico and one of the most clearly defined state symbols in the world. Its imagery originates from an origin account recorded in early Nahua sources, describing the founding of Tenochtitlan, the city that would later become Mexico City.

The emblem depicts a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, grasping a serpent. According to the tradition preserved in codices and early colonial-era chronicles, this image marked the divinely indicated location where the Mexica people were to establish their capital. Over time, this foundational symbol evolved from mythic guidance into a permanent expression of national identity and state continuity.

In its modern form, the Mexican Coat of Arms represents sovereignty, endurance, and the legitimacy of the state rooted in origin and memory rather than ornament.
