The Lion and Bull motif is one of the most prominent relief scenes carved into the stone stairways and gateways of Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Repeated across the site, the scene shows a lion grasping or overpowering a bull in a highly formalized and balanced composition. Rather than depicting a specific event, the image functions as a symbolic motif within imperial art.

Scholars generally understand this scene as representing cyclical forces such as renewal, continuity, and the ordered rhythm of the natural world within the Achaemenid worldview. It appears consistently in architectural contexts associated with royal processions and ceremonial space, suggesting a visual language of stability and order rather than narrative conflict. The exact meaning was likely understood through shared cultural symbolism rather than a single fixed interpretation.

This relief is carved from solid beech wood using precision CNC carving, then carefully hand-sanded and laser-refined to preserve the layered depth and clean lines of the original stone reliefs. A protective shellac finish enhances the natural grain of the wood while maintaining a warm, understated surface appropriate for a historically grounded piece.

The finished plaque measures approximately 7 x 7 inches and is designed for display on a wall, shelf, or desk. Its square format reflects the balanced geometry common in Persepolis relief panels and allows the composition to remain visually grounded without decorative excess.

Each piece is made from natural solid wood. Grain patterns, tone variation, and small natural markings will vary from piece to piece and are part of the material’s character.

Optional personalization is available on the back of the piece. A name, date, or short message may be engraved to mark a meaningful occasion while keeping the front surface historically intact.
